Mont Albert Village Gardening Group
The Mont Albert Village Gardening Group has over 70 members and is a registered Landcare organisation.
The Group’s purpose is to:
· curate gardens on Mont Albert Plaza consistent with the heritage values of the restored station building and Mont Albert village;
· revegetate nominated road and rail verges with native species;
· provide habitat for local wildlife, in particular native birds, possums and lizards;
· set up a community garden that will provide herbs and vegetables that can be available for community and family purposes, and
· bring community members together to work in a socially supportive way.

The garden re-build to replace the inappropriate mix of plants left by the LXRP at Mont Albert Village Plaza and surrounds is now complete and blooming, especially the ‘produce garden’ in Beresford Street. The focus has now moved further afield along Churchill Street, the Village public carpark and Lorne Parade where many native trees are being added to the sparse planting left by the LXRP. Substantial and greatly appreciated contributions from MASH Rotary, Bendigo Bank, Bunnings, Yarra Valley Water and local donors have paid for plants and materials. More planting with occur over the next few years to help restore Mont Albert’s ‘leafy green’ heritage.
Past, Present and Future
Before the closure of Mont Albert Railway Station and the re-location of the station building there was a Mont Albert Stationeers gardening group. Now reformed as a Landcare group, over the next decade it will work to re-establish appropriate trees, gardens and habitat along the rail corridor. This will involve planting different species and establishing denser planting than the LXRP left behind.
Community gardening takes place on the 4th Saturday of each month, with volunteer gardeners convening on Mont Albert Village Plaza mid-morning. Everybody is welcome and anybody wanting to join the Gardening Group can email:
